Nut graf stands for nutshell paragraph or the nutshell of a story. That is why it is called the nut graf. Nut grafs basically explain why you are reading the story is significant. Nut grafs however are not usually used in hard news stories they are usually used more in features.
Nut grafs can be found in different places within the story. It can sometimes be found in the lead. Or more often it is found in a paragraph proceeding shortly after the lead. Nut grafs are also meant to keep readers reading the story.
